1. Hierapolis

It is one of top tourist locations in Turkey. This place attracts tourist not only for the travertines structure but also for the picturesuqe beauty. It was founded by curative center around 190 BC by Eumenes II of Pergamum and flourished in both Romans and the Byzantines. Here large number of Jewish and Orthodox communities lives here. This place was abandoned because of earthqualkes and tremors back 1334 AD. Dont miss Roman Theatre, the Agora and on-site museum.

 

2. Travertines

This is rated as one of the World Heritage site because of saucer shaped travertines or terraces of Pamukkale. This powder-white mountain above the village provide a contrasted view to the clear blue sky and green plains village. You will find warm water running over this calcite surface as it helps in protecting the unique calcite surface. You can go into these terrraces baarefoot and travel your way down to the village. Just be prepared to get direct sunlight and apply plenty of sunblocks.

These terraces and the clay here are known for their thermautical reasons. You can get submerged in these terraces and enjoy the experience. If you want to walk straight down to the village or the main road, it is 30 minutes travel.

3. Roman Theatre

This amazing theatre was built during the reigns of the Roman Emperors Hadrian and Septimius Severus. It is in well-preserved form and has retained much of its original details. This theatre is capable of seating more than 12,000 spectators. You can still view the stage and the decorative panel which has been built in the front row.  Most of the renovated work was done in 1970s by Italian stone-cutters.

4. Karahayit Hot Springs

These springs bubble up to 55°C and presence of different oxides give different or variety of colour to this particular area. There are small bathing pool here where you can soak and soothe your travel muscles. This place is said to be famous for its therapeutic benefits. It is 5 km west of Pamukkale.

5. Aphrodisias

It has become one of the most visited places in Turkey. This area was settled in the 4th millenium or the early Bronze Age. It was the golden age and is considered to be center of learning for sculpture, medicine and philosophy. This temple was built in 100 BC and has 14 columns standing tall. In th 5th century it was converted into pagan temple by Byzantines. To the north of Aphrodisias, there is a well preserved stadium which is capable of holding 30,000 spectators. It is around 97 kms southwest from Pamukkale.

6. Kayaş

This central place is known for its beer and quality Turkish food. You can enjoy long bars, eateries and football matches. It is famous for Sigara böreği (deep-fried, cigar-shaped börek – filled pastry – filled with cheese) , güveç (meat and vegetable stew) and şiş kebaps (roasted skewered meat).

Myth is that this was one of the favourite pool of Cleopatra, the former queen of Egypt. It is filled with pure and clean warm water and contain artifacts from Roman Empire. To access the pool you have to pay extra money or else you can enjoy the area around the actual pool which is pretty cozy.

The best view of Pamukkale is from top. To try have fun and enjoy the perfect view try paragliding. This is one of the amazing experiences which you should definitely try when going on a trip to Pamukkale.

Hot-Air-Balloon Ride

Although not as famous as Cappadocia, however it does provide magnificent experience. You get to fly near the travertines and you can take pictures from angles that you cant get without balloon ride.

How to get to Pamukkale

There are various options available on mode of transport:

  • By plane: You can choose to fly to Denizli which is around 65 km away from Pamukkale. You can travel on shuttle services from Denizli to Pamukkale. The seond nearest airport is in Izmir which is around 250 km Pamukkale.
  • By bus: The other way using overnight buses. You can find any connection bus from every city to Denizli.
